How to care for injured horses

How to care for a horse with leg wounds

  1. Examine wound to see if it is deep enough to get stitches ie a laceration or punctured wound if so Call a Vet emediately
  2. If does not need stitches and is an open wound clean the wound with sterile saline solution or water.
  3. press wound with gauze pads or a clean towel before bandaging the wound
  4. Apply a disinfectant like dilute Betadine solution to kill bacteria it is an abrasion
  5. Bandage the wound with gazes bandages and dressings

Healing process
  • Wounds on the skin part of the leg heal quickly
  • wounds above muscle, joints or bones heal long and slowly sometimes requiring surgery's and therapy and lots of rest
  • In order to prevent infection wound must be cleaned regularly on a day to day basis
  • Stitched wounds heal quickly

Horse Colic

Symptoms

  • The horse refuses to eat anything, even a favorite treat
  • The horse refuses to drink
  • The horse is sweating or is very warm even though it hasn’t been ridden and hasn’t been outside running around in the pasture.
  • The horse is nipping or biting at its sides, either one side in particular or both sides.
  • The horse is pacing
  • The horse is agitated
  • The horse lies down and refuses to get up
  • The horse lies down and starts rolling violently
  • The horse is snapping or biting at you when you come near and it doesn’t normally snap at you
  • The horse is bobbing its head up and down or switching its weight from one side to the other
  • The horse is repeatedly curling its upper lip.


Treatment of Colic

  • If you suspect that your horse has colic and the horse is lying down or rolling, get the horse up immediately, no matter what it takes. Get the vet on the phone but don’t leave the horse to make sure it doesn’t lie down again.
